Floodplain Mitigation Buyout Program, City of Austin

(November 2008 to February 2009)

 

The City and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers planned to buy out approximately 400 homes within the twenty-five year floodplain in the Onion Creek Forest and Yarrabee Bend floodplain area.  Ecosystem restoration and recreational facilities were planned on the residual lands. NLA provided the public involvement support including three community meetings and one-on meetings with the property owners. The intent of the program was to reduce the existing flood hazards in order to protect lives and property while also maintaining regulatory codes and design criteria for new development with the City of Austin.
